Weekend protests alone rarely topple entrenched authoritarian systems. They can signal dissent, but by themselves they often get absorbed into the status quo — tolerated as symbolic outlets so long as they don’t disrupt the machinery of power or profit.
Authoritarian or deeply corrupt regimes usually count on exactly that rhythm:
People vent on weekends,
the economy and bureaucracy run normally on weekdays,
and nothing truly threatens their control.
Real leverage comes when resistance disrupts the system’s ability to function — economically, politically, or socially. That can mean sustained strikes, boycotts, workplace slowdowns, mass non-cooperation, or building alternative structures of community and support that reduce dependence on the regime.
So, while weekend protests can help mobilize and inspire, they’re not enough on their own. The real turning point comes when people stop treating resistance as a weekend activity and start integrating it into daily life — when disruption becomes continuous, organized, and impossible to ignore.
